Actually, the story line was great, and I really liked the characters. I was in suspense about the culprit until the very end. I've read both Gist and Bertrand previously, and generally like their books. The only reason I gave this one four stars instead of five is for the wonky formatting. I read the Kindle version, and the formatting was all over the place. Weird paragraph breaks, some in the midst of dialogues, no markings for section breaks, etc. Also a few typos, word usage errors, and the like, but this was not as distracting as the formatting issue. I sort of hate to take away a whole star for that, but I couldn't take a half, so it is what it is. But, yeah, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and read both authors again.

Mark Bertrand first met in a Houston critique group, they never expected where friendship would take them. She wrote romance; he wrote crime novels. But growing respect for each other's work culminated in the decision to try blending their talents into this wonderfully engaging story merging romance and mystery.

Rylee Monroe walks dogs in old-money Charleston,Deeanne Gist, J. I thought this was a great book! I had suspicions who the culprit was, but was surprised at how the mystery ended. The two author's styles, I think, fit together seamlessly. A really good story that kept me up, reading, a lot later than I should have.
I have never read a book by either author. So, I didn't know what to expect. I know Mark hasn't had once published yet - but Deeanne Gist seems to be a popular Christian author. I would not however consider her to make her testimony very well known to her readers - pretty lukewarm. However, I did like the basic idea for the book and the main characters (Logan and Rylee) were great. Although, I'm not sure I would have picked her to be a dogwalker. Not a very interesting occupation to me, although I like dogs okay. Anyway, I did enjoy the book, but wish I had enjoyed the story a little bit more, didn't all fit together for me toward the end. One thing I was really disappointed in was them not including Logan's parents in the ending. I was waiting for them to meet Rylee and for her to feel what a real Christian home is like. I was shocked she never met them in the book. Good, but not as good as it could have been.
Another terrific story from Deeanne Gist! I'm sure Mr. Bertrand has added a lot of information to this story also. The plot keeps your interest and you want to keep reading until you find out how it will end. This story takes place in a contemporary setting and this is new from Deeanne. I enjoy her books very much and as much as I enjoy Deeanne's historical novels, she has done a great job in the contemporary setting also.
Beguiled is a fresh shift from a typical love story. As we can always count on with Deeanne Gist there's a true love story within a wonderful mystery as well. The combination of both writing styles produced a wonderful piece. I live in SC and it's a joy to know certain streets of our beloved Charleston. I would definitely recommend this read if you love either one of the authors.
Looking for a fun whodunit that will keep you guessing until the end? Then pick up a copy of Beguiled by co-authors Deeanne Gist and Mark Bertrand. The authors not only created a clever mystery with endearing characters, they bring historic Charleston to life for the reader. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end.
The characters in Beguiled are well developed and believable. But more than the characters, the authors brought historic Charleston to life. You feel like you are there, viewing the sights south of Broad through the eyes of one who truly loves her city.
( I got this book from Bethany House in return for a review. The opinions are mine and mine alone)
I just finished reading this book and for those of us who have grown to love Deanne Gist's style this is a stretch. I read the first chapter and quit, but later picked it up again for lack of anything else to read. By the third chapter things were picking up and it just kept getting better and better from then on. I am surprised the editor left the book the way it is because I think a different beginning would have drawn me in much sooner. The end is a bit disjointed, not enough info is given about the killer and his motives. Having said all that, I did enjoy the book and could not put it down until I finished it. The cover makes no sense to me. It mimics most of her other books and I think that is a mistake because this book is in no way like the others.
Can I preface this by gushing about how much I love bargain books? , you are absolutely amazing for having so many hidden gems tucked into these bins for six dollars a piece. My library thanks you, but my wallet only does slightly. With such great prices I tend to overspend, but I digress.

I found Ms. Gist during one of my many ventures into the online bargain bin and instantly fell in love with her writing. All of her novels are absolutely fantastic and well written. So, when I stumbled upon this collaboration I decided to scoop it up before it was too late. I have to say that I only skimmed the summary (I don't like to spoil too much), but my perception of the book was far off to the actual story. Due to my experience with the author, who had before written historical fiction exclusively, and the lovely cover I placed this novel somewhere in the 1920s. Maybe a little later. A dog walker and news reporter didn't stir up any red flags for that time period to be honest, so I was actually a little disappointed to find out it was modern fiction. Historical fiction is my personal taste, but Ms. Gist is such a lovely writer I would have bought it even if I knew from the start.

That being said, I wasn't disappointed with the actual story. Both Rylee and Logan are likable characters. I don't want to go too in depth with the plot, because I hate when people inadvertently ruin some of the novel for me, so I'll just say you wont regret buying this. If you've read any of Ms. Gist's work be aware that it does differ, but she's writing with someone else and that's to be expected. The writing itself is still wonderful, and its a story you can lose yourself in. A quick read, but a quality one nonetheless.
