On an October day, teenager Missy Avila was lured into the woods, beaten, tortured, and drowned. Missy's best friend, Karen, publicly vows to find the killer and even moves in with Missy's family to help. No one could have guessed what would happen next. #1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury delivers a story full of twists and turns, dead ends, betrayals and confessions. Missy's Murder is a shocking tale of how jealousy can drive people to acts of great evil. Available digitally for the first time in a repackaged format, Missy's Murder is one of four true crime novels written at the beginning of the author's career. These books have been re-released with new covers, a fresh edit, and a special reader's letter from Karen explaining how the darkness in these stories became more than she could bear and prompted a dramatic career change to write Life-Changing Fiction.

Missy Murder eBook Karen Kingsbury

An engrossing true story about the betrayal and murder of teenager Missy by her best friends.

It's a real page turner but very distressing to read about at the same time. The author did a very good job of making Missy come alive to the reader, so you feel an extra sense of dread as you read because you know Missy's ultimate fate. The author takes us through the events leading to the betrayal and brutal murder of Missy plus the horrific heartbreaking aftermath, including one of the murderers unbelievably and cruelly playing the part of grieving friend and moving in with Missy's family! And also bizarrely trying to transform her own toddler into Missy!

I would have given this book 5 stars but at times it reads a bit flowery and exaggerated like a soap opera (especially at the beginning) and that wasn't necessary because Missy's life was compelling enough on its own.

I recommend this book but have a box of tissues handy because, unless you are made of stone, you will end up shedding some tears.

Missy Murder eBook Karen Kingsbury Reviews

Pretty interesting story. Too bad the end result was not as satisfying but still a good read. Sad that those so called friends had such insecurities! And also sad that those friends did not have families that were willing to see what was going on and too busy with their own problems.
I am a huge fan of Karen Kingsbury books. I can just imagine how writing this book affected her while investigating it. I didn't see all the evidence with my physical eyes but I felt like I was there in person! I was on the edge of my seat and couldn't put it down. Very sad story. But I am so glad that the murderers were finally caught and justice for Missy was finally done!
Karen Kingsbury is a great writer and I was sure what to expect since this isn't the stuff I've known her to write. She did a great Kobe telling about the Mother's part in the story in addition to telling us about Missy. Her description of her friends was detailed in telling the reader how manipulative they were and deceptive uncaring through this plight. They need MENTAL help and have since day 1. Did they get that help? Can't tell based on their release from Prison.. Heartless Mentally Needy
SPOILER ALERT...I already knew the story and was looking forward to reading this to get more details...ugh. Halfway through I got so disgusted. I got so sick of Karen's fabrications of "who killed her best friend Missy". I can't believe no one just said enough is enough and maybe caught on to what she was doing...were her family and friends really that clueless? And I can't believe, no matter how much they wanted justice for Missy, they, especially Irene Avila, would agree to let things get so far as to take matters into their own hands by severely beating someone (Jimmy) and planning his execution, on KAREN's say so...really??? What an insult this book turned out to be! And what's with all the typos? Didn't anyone edit/proofread this before it was published?
I'll start by saying this book is not like other Karen Kingsbury books. The introduction also explains that, she started her career writing true crime novels. This book was good but you have to read it with the understand that it is based on a true crime and true facts, it does have some fiction parts in it but for the most part it seems to be based on the actual events. It was a very interesting book, I enjoyed it and the fact that it actually happened just makes it all even crazier.
As soon as I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. That's how much I was drawn into it. Missy seemed to be a typical teenager. She had some friends who weren't so nice. Her friend Karen, as it seems from the beginning, had severe problems. What I don't understand is, how the family, especially the mother, let her manipulate them, to the point of wanting to get revenge, by committing murder themselves.
I don't believe that a parent can be a friend and parent. You can do one, but not two. For this girl's mother to overlook her daughter's choice of drugs, I find unbelievable. But overall it was a good book.
A true crime story is always harder to read than fiction, simply because you realize this was a real person with talent, personality, loved ones, potential for so much, and most importantly someone who was a child of God and taken away from this world for only selfish, cruel reasons. That said, the author does a wonderful job of keeping the story on track, letting the reader have a good picture of who the victim (Missy) was, and the events that led to her murder. She makes the story become a real life of Missy and her family, and does a good job of not sounding judgmental.
