Kat, Incorrigible reminded me of Gail Carriger's Finishing School series and Patricia Wrede's Sorcery and Cecilia, some of my favorite books! 12 year old Kat is a wonderfully free character, with a quick intelligence and a sublime disregard for nineteenth century societal rules. In addition, it appears that she inherited her mother's talent for magic. An altogether enchanting story!

Kat Incorrigible Stephanie Burgis 9781416994473 Books Reviews

Delightful book in the vein of Diana Wynn Jone's Christopher Chant, though with headstrong Kat at the lead of the story. I would have loved this as a kid and I still loved it now. A great choice for girls who love historical fantasy.
Full disclosure--I want to be Kat!
What fun. She struggles with who and want she is or can be and does wonderful things along the way.
She goes against the social mores of her time--cuts her hair, climbs trees, has thoughts of her own! Scandalous!
This is a delightful story mixing period aspects with magic with irresistible young ladies.

All in all, great fun!
Like Jane Eyre? Wuthering Heights? You'll probably like this comedy of manners with a fantasy twist... but will your daughters?

Kat is just learning that she's a witch with powerful magic. She decides to use it to save her sisters from badly arranged marriages. It's fun, and funny. I bought it for my daughter & read it first to see if it was appropriate. I haven't read it to her yet, and I'm not sure if she'll like it due to the lack of animals.
Since I share my name with the young title character I had to see what this book is all about! Take romantic endeavors gone awry (a la Jane Austen) mixed with a spirited young protagonist (like Pippi Longstocking or Anne Shirley), sprinkled with a little magic and you have a good sense of this charming read. Kat is such a spunky and endearing character...watching someone constantly get in trouble has never been so fun! I also loved her sister Angeline as she's equally as feisty. Compulsively readable, I flew through this book in one sitting. My only complaint is that the book ended far too soon! Go out and read this book ASAP, you won't regret it!
This was a cute fun read, perhaps more suited to middle grade readers than young adult. I still enjoyed it thoroughly though! The characters were each complete individuals, with Kat and her sisters working off each other nicely. Kat just wants to help and is determined to figure life out by herself, an admirable quality in one so young. When her older sister Angeline foils her escape plan which she intended to bring wealth to the family and pull the family out of debt Kat starts looking for another way to help.

Discovering that Elissa is to be sold off to a wealthy noble and that Angeline has secreted away their mothers spell books leads to Kat getting herself into more trouble than is good for her. I enjoyed the various scraps she got into (highway men anyone?), while obviously improbable, they were fun to read about and suited the character. Elissa annoyed me with her dramatic selflessness (typical teen perhaps?) and Angeline was definitely my favorite. You can see the sisterly bond (and conflicts) here, especially as we are getting Kat's view so she is seen as the silly, useless younger sister who is always getting into trouble. I thought this relationship was very well done (it was the main one after all!)

We get to see Kat discover and test her magical abilities (under the eye of a Guardian) and I would like to see how her training progresses. In typical magic story fashion I am assuming she gets stronger as she gets older which could be... interesting. The plot was a little weak, there were definitely parts I would have liked to have expanded or explained more and bits I thought we could do well without (none come to mind which definitely reflects my 3 star rating).

This is supposed to be the start of a series and I would be interested to see where it goes but as a standalone book it falls into the neutral category for me. A fun quick read that I would recommend to anyone looking for something light and magical with a smidge of regency flair, but not one I will probably be rereading.

I confess, I've been waiting for this one for over a year. It just sounded like a delightful read. And it was well worth the wait. Kat is just the sort of character that I love to read about. She's feisty and loyal and determined, but very human in her mistakes.

When Kat learns that her sister, Elissa, in order to save the family from disgrace, is being pushed into a marriage with Sir Neville, a rich widower about whom rumors swirl, she is determined to stop it. When her first plan involving running away dressed as a boy to London fails, she must come up with another plan to save her sister and family. Taking place in the Victorian era, this has shades of Jane Austen, except for a younger age and with magic thrown in for good measure. I found the writing to be good but not perfect, but the real fun is in the characters and plot. Almost immediately the reader starts cheering for Kat in her efforts to help, despite the fact that her plans tend to be rather dramatic and impulsive in nature. When Kat investigates her mother's things, she discovers a world very different from the one she has known, but throws herself into the magical realm with as much enthusiasm as she does everything. I found the book to be delightful and well worth reading multiple times. Definitely one of my favorites of the year.
